Northern Virginia Chamber Applauds Proposed Federal Action on Metro Funding and Accountability
Tysons, Va. – Today, Senators Mark Warner (VA), Tim Kaine (VA), Ben Cardin (MD), and Chris VanHollen (MD) introduced the Metro Safety, Accountability and Investment Act, a bill that will extend important federal funding and expand on reform and accountability measures for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). This proposal is an important follow-up to the work of the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and the MetroNow Coalition in 2018 to secure dedicated Metro funding at the regional level.
The Metro Safety, Accountability and Investment Act will extend and enhance the federal government’s current commitment to Metro under the 2008 PRIIA legislation, providing $150 million annually that is matched by the WMATA jurisdictions, and will expand that funding by an additional $50 million if WMATA meets certain targets. Furthermore, it establishes key safety, financial, and performance accountability measures that are consistent with the goals set out by the MetroNow Coalition, of which the Northern Virginia Chamber is a founding organization and Executive Committee member.
“For the past decade, PRIIA has been a successful model for effectively and reliably funding Metro’s capital needs,” said Julie Coons, President & CEO of the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce. “Enhancing the federal government’s annual commitment to WMATA from $150 million to $200 million is a positive development for Greater Washington, its business community, the regional workforce, and the hundreds of thousands of federal employees that rely on Metro every day. We congratulate our congressional leaders in Virginia and across the region for presenting this ambitious proposal to address a key regional mobility challenge.”
In 2018, the MetroNow Coalition leveraged the region’s most prominent business and advocacy voices to lead the call for $500 million in regional, dedicated funding for Metro – the Northern Virginia Chamber was proud to lead the effort in Virginia, working with leaders in Richmond to secure the Commonwealth’s share of that funding. The Northern Virginia Chamber and its MetroNow partners are committed to ensuring that action is taken to put Metro — the backbone of greater Washington’s transportation infrastructure — on a safe, smart, and sustainable path forward in the years to come.
