Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce Applauds Amazon’s Decision to Locate Second Headquarters in Northern Virginia
Tysons, Va. – Today, Amazon announced that it will locate a portion of its second headquarters – “HQ2” – in Northern Virginia, bringing tens of thousands of additional jobs to the region over the next decade.
“The Northern Virginia business community is excited to welcome Amazon’s extraordinary investment of resources, innovation, and talent to our region,” said Julie Coons, President and CEO, Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce. “Amazon HQ2 is the culmination of Northern Virginia’s unprecedented transformation over the course of a generation – from a suburban bedroom community to an economic powerhouse home to many of the world’s largest, most innovative and influential companies.”
238 North American cities and regions responded to Amazon’s HQ2 RFP. In January 2018, Amazon selected twenty finalists, including Northern Virginia. Among its requirements, Amazon noted its desire to locate HQ2 in a major metropolitan area with access to a highly-educated workforce, a robust transportation network, access to an international airport, and a stable and business friendly environment.
“Amazon’s decision to locate HQ2 in Northern Virginia reemphasizes what makes the region a premier business destination – world-class, highly-educated, diverse talent, robust infrastructure, and a positive business climate at the local, state, and regional level,” said Jennifer Siciliano, Chief External Affairs Officer, Inova, and Chair, Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. “Northern Virginia’s business community has worked to preserve and build on these core regional priorities for decades, and it will continue to do so for years to come.”
“The Northern Virginia business community is second to none, and the Northern Virginia Chamber is proud to represent and serve those businesses, including Amazon, that contribute to our thriving region,” said Northern Virginia Chamber President and CEO Julie Coons. “We are excited to work with Amazon as it works to make a lasting impact on Northern Virginia and Greater Washington.”
