1.In your opinion, what makes a company innovative?
When most people think of innovation, they think of the end product. But there are a lot of different aspects to innovation and, to me, an innovative company is one that is really blazing a trail into territory that hasn’t been explored before. Innovation is about developing new technologies, or leveraging existing technologies, in new ways to create solutions that change people’s lives. That’s why I’m so excited about what we’re doing at RightEye. We’re combining proven science based on peer reviewed research and the latest advancements in eye tracking technology to offer a new kind of vision testing to provide better, faster, and more cost effective solutions to improve things like concussion detection, early detection of children’s eye disorders, and more.
2.What makes your company innovative?
Our company is innovative because of the innovative solutions we are bringing to the fields of healthcare, sports and defense. The RightEye vison testing platform is enabling optometrists to replace typical eye exams used in doctor’s offices, providing new ways to deliver vision therapy for neuro optometrists, and offering a more accurate solution for concussion monitoring to doctors, rehabilitation centers and emergency room providers across the country. The reaction to RightEye solutions has been exciting and incredible. Leaders within the vision and heath care fields can’t wait to start using our products. Innovation is everything that Righteye stands for. We put it at the heart of our strategy. The impetus behind our company is a strong desire to build relevant technology that is innovative and that also has a direct, positive, and quantifiable impact on real lives.
3.What or who are some innovative companies or people that inspire you and your team?
I joined RightEye a year ago after the company was formed. As a team we are constantly inspired by each other because we each have a unique perspective experience and contribution. Our CEO is an experienced entrepreneur, our Chief Science Officer is a practical scientist, and I bring insight and expertise on technology and industry. Being on a team where each person has a complementary ability, you really can make 1 plus 1 equal 3. We love to refer to ourselves as being "In violent agreement!" Discussion and sometimes disagreement has made us better every step of the way.
4.What are some publications, print or digital, you read daily or have read that help you stay on top of your game? These could be books, magazine, blogs, e-newsletters, etc.
I have multiple searches on Google that identify news or happenings on topics related to the work we do at RightEye. Additionally, Mashable, Engadget, Forrester Research, Google news, LinkedIn Groups, Marketing Sherpa are all sources of information for me. I did recently read Steve Jobs Biography by Isaacson. I found this to be very interesting with respect to Jobs’ incredible insight as well as his challenges. As leaders, it’s important to manage your desire to achieve the best with the needs of the people on your team who are core to your process and critical to your ultimate success.
5.What advice would you give to up-and-coming leaders striving to be innovative in today’s business environment?
Our success is the result of really believing in ourselves and sticking to our long-term business vision even when it seems crazy. When a company has a strong and inspiring vision about why it exists and about how it enhances its customer’s world, the better focused it will be at innovating products/services around its mission and goals. I believe the challenge for many up-and-coming leaders striving to be innovative in today’s business environment is that they are so busy in the day-to-day operations, that they lack the time and energy to maintain an eye on the future that is essential for innovation success. To ensure that success, engage in a comprehensive analysis of your business that includes evaluating the past and visioning the future. Ongoing dialogue with customers and industry partners is key. We talk personally to customers daily and they are free to call my personal cell phone. As an early innovator, this type of direct communication it crucial to honing our solutions and providing evidence of our outstanding service and dedication to customer success.
