In this month of romantic and platonic love, we at the Chamber ask, “how can we help you love your business?”
Julie Coons | Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, President & CEO

At first thought it may seem odd to think about showing one’s business love; however, if you consider how much time of life is devoted to your business’s activities, the number of people whose security depend upon your business’s success, and your business’s role within our community, don’t you think it deserves a little love?
There are many ways to “love” your business: investing in your talent, customers, infrastructure, products, services… The list goes on and on with each worthy of your attention. At the Chamber, we know there is an additional—and very important—way to invest in your business that may not come readily to mind: advocating through the Chamber not only for your business, but also for our Virginia and regional business climates.
Advocating on our members’ behalf is top of the Chamber’s mind. You may have heard that we are well known and respected as The Voice of Business in Northern Virginia. It’s a title we’ve earned by maintaining a range of resources and investments that ensure we can advance legislation, policies, and the dissemination of knowledge necessary to support a healthy and growing business environment.
To start, each year the Chamber Policy Committee (co-chairs Tom Rust, Pennoni and Matt McQueen, Peraton) provides input and guidance to the Chamber’s Vice President of Government Affairs, Clayton Medford, and the Chamber’s lobbyists at Williams Mullen on key business issues that protect or advance business objectives. This policy platform guides the work on our members’ behalf during the annual Virginia General Assembly meetings in Richmond where Clayton and many of our member companies advocate every day.
Annually we hold a lobby day in Richmond where members just like you meet legislators and share their views on policy and legislation. The day is capped off with a Legislative Reception, Viva Virginia, where you can relax with and share first-hand stories about your business with the elected and appointed officials who make important economic and business decisions for Virginia.
In addition to the above, the Chamber has an important Political Action Committee (PAC) called Nova BizPAC. Currently co-chaired by Scott McGeary, Washington Gas, and David Skiles, Vectre Group, Nova BizPAC meets with candidates for office, considers their position on issues important to our members, and chooses to financially support and endorse candidates that align with our policy platform.
We are dedicated to maintaining and growing Northern Virginia as the best place to do business anywhere, be it in the region, state, United States, or globally. We invite you to show your business “love” though participation in our Policy Committee, Nova BizPAC, annual lobby day, and Viva Virginia—all members are welcome. If an issue comes up that you care about, email me or Clayton Medford directly. We want to hear your views and concerns!
