Annual Capital Region Business Forum Announced
Each year the two Governors and Mayor of the National Capital Region share the stage at the Capital Region Business Forum. This year the forum is scheduled for September 27th and jointly hosted by the [novachamber.org]Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, [novachamber.org]Greater Washington Board of Trade, and [www.pgcoc.org]Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce.
This prestigious event will be held at the new MGM National Harbor and will address the most critical, pressing issues and opportunities that affect the District of Columbia, the State of Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Topics will include:
- Infrastructure and transportation initiatives,
- Outlook of federal presence and implications of change,
- Identifying ways to apply smart cities regionally,
- Collaborative opportunities for economic development and regional cooperation, and more.
2017 Virginia Gubernatorial Debate Announced
The Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and the George Mason University Schar School of Policy and Government invites you to attend the Northern Virginia Gubernatorial Debate between Mr. Ed Gillespie (Republican) and Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam (Democrat).
For more than 25 years, the Northern Virginia Chamber has been proud to provide a unique opportunity for the Northern Virginia business community and voters across our region to see the candidates firsthand as they go head-to-head on the issues that matter most during the region’s only annual political debate, presented in partnership with NBC4 Washington.
Highly respected journalist and political commentator, political director of NBC News, and moderator of NBC’s Meet The Press, Chuck Todd, will moderate the debate, which will focus on the critical issues facing Virginia voters. Virginia Jumps Six Spots in CNBC’s Annual ‘Best States for Business’ in 2017
The Commonwealth of Virginia has moved up six places to number seven in CNBC’s Best States for Business 2017. The annual list had previously ranked Virginia as the 13th best state to do business in 2016. CNBC said it scored all 50 states on more than 60 measures of competitiveness, developed with input from business and policy experts, government sources and the states themselves. Easter Seals Emeritus Board Member Craig Ruppert Speaks at US Chamber of Commerce Foundation Event on “The Business Case for High-Quality Child Care”
On June 21, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation introduced a new initiative and report, "Workforce of Today, Workforce of Tomorrow: The Business Case for High-Quality Child Care," to explore the role of high-quality child care as a critical mechanism for strengthening the current and future workforce. Easter Seals Serving DC|MD|VA Emeritus Board Member Craig Ruppert spoke at the event as part of the distinguished panel of scientists, educators, public policy experts, advocates, and business leaders examining the concept of high-quality child care as not just a benefit for working parents but also a critical component of America’s early education system. SOSi Awarded Contract to Provide Public Affairs Support for U.S. Forces Afghanistan
SOS International LLC (SOSi) announced they were awarded a 5-year contract by the U.S. Army Deputy Chief of Staff Communications, Public Affairs Operations Support Services in support of U.S. Forces Afghanistan. SOSi will help inform local, regional and international media and counter misinformation in support of the Afghan population, their government, and the international community through the use of their EV3 platform. Survey: Short-Term Property Rentals in Fairfax County
This year, the Virginia General Assembly passed Senate Bill 1578, which gives localities the authority to require registration of Short-Term Rentals. As a result, the Board of Supervisors directed the creation of a working group to draft zoning regulations for Short-Term Rentals in the County and to establish a registry of Short-Term Rentals. In proposing Short-Term Rental regulations to the Board, the working group seeks to balance residents' interests to protect the character of their neighborhood with the interests of persons wanting to operate Short-Term Rentals within their residence. Innovation Health Step it Up Challenge
This summer Innovation Health challenged 20 leaders from across Northern Virginia to participate in the first ever Step It Up Challenge for a chance to win $3,000 for a charity of the winners’ choice. After two weeks of grueling competition among, and more than 3.5 million steps logged by the participants, local Arlington resident Patrick King was crowned the winner! Because of his dedication and commitment to his health (Patrick logged more than 40,000 steps on the final day to take home the win!), he received a $3,000 donation from Innovation Health to give to Bridges to Independent for their work leading individuals and families out of homelessness and into stable, independent futures. Anthony Nader Named Honorary Chairman of 2017 United Cardinal Classic
United Bank is pleased to announce that Anthony Nader has been named Honorary Chairman of its 2017 United Cardinal Classic benefiting Inova Kellar Center and the United Bank Community Fund. Nader is managing director of SWaN & Legend Venture Partners and chairman of the Inova Health System Board of Trustees. United Bank is proud to introduce the United Cardinal Classic and become a part of the rich tradition started by Cardinal Bank in 2002. Now in its 15th year, the tournament is one of the most successful fundraising initiatives in the region, attracting more than 500 business partners and community members annually and raising more than $5.4 million for community partners. Britepaths' Collect for Kids Back to School Program
Britepaths' Collect for Kids Back to School Program is seeking donations this summer to provide school supplies to 2,500 students in need in Fairfax County Public Schools for the coming school year. Britepaths will collect funds, backpacks and scientific calculators from July 1 through August 5. The funds help Britepaths purchase supplies at a steep discount through Fairfax County's Collect for Kids Partnership. While families often pay $40 or more per child for supplies, these donations will help Britepaths purchase all the supplies needed for $10-$15 per student. Britepaths' greatest needs are for companies and organizations to sponsor the Program, and for organizations to run donation drives and serve as collection sites. FCPS Business Partner & Community Partner of the Year Nominations Now Being Accepted
Nomination applications for the FCPS Business Partner of the Year and FCPS Community Partner of the Year are now being accepted. The awards, sponsored by The Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools (Foundation for FCPS) and the FCPS Business & Community Partnerships Office, recognize a business or non-profit that has made a significant impact on the school system, either through a relationship with a department or with an individual school. The awards will be presented at the Foundation for FCPS’ 2017 Superintendent’s Luncheon on November 20, 2017. The online applications may be found here. Golf Tournament to Benefit Easter Seals
On Thursday, September 14th, Triumph Enterprises will host its 9th Charity Golf Tournament to benefit Easter Seals Serving DC|MD|VA and military families. The tournament will be held at the Bull Run Golf Club in Haymarket, Virginia. Special Guests include Former Miss USA, Captain Deshauna Barber, and Motivational Speaker and Three-Time Super Bowl Champion, Charles Mann, who is also an Easter Seals Serving DC|MD|VA Honorary Board Member. Volunteers Prepare Puppies for Important Mission: Helping Vets
Dulles-based Veterans Moving Forward provides service dogs and canine therapy to veterans with physical and mental health challenges, all at no cost to the veterans. With the help of a small army of volunteers, the organization aims to make a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans, and increase their safety and independence within their homes and communities.
