Outstanding Corporate Citizen of the Year (Mid-Size Business) Nominee
Chair & CEO
Why do you believe CSR strategy is important for a company?
CSR strategy is vitally important for a company, as it is always important to improve the community around you. Loudoun County is an integral part of Unanet’s identity, and so it is important that while the community helps support Unanet’s growth and success, Unanet endeavors to help the county flourish and thrive. It is also important to have an emphasis on CSR as a company so that employees continue to make charitable service contributions, perpetuating a thoughtful mentality and corporate culture.
Do you believe that the CSR work you participate in should be affiliated with the work you/your company does? For example, should an Oil company’s CSR be in cleaning up oil spills?
The CSR work that a company does should be partially related to the work that the company does, but not entirely so. A lot of the CSR work that Unanet completes is related to STEM learning, however, we also choose some of our CSR work based on our commitment to supporting women in STEM and female leadership, as well as Loudoun County causes based on our Headquarters location.
What makes your company stand out compared to other companies participating in CSR?
Our company stands out in regards to CSR because our commitment to service is not only a company initiative, but an employee supported initiative. Each of our employees are dedicated to improving their community and environment, giving at least 16 hours of service annually to their self-selected non-profit(s). In addition to our employees contributing individual hours, the company as a whole contributes both time and financial support to many other charitable initiatives. As an example, the company is participating in a Habitat for Humanity build in Loudoun County this Spring.
Do you believe contributing back to the community allows your company to have a deeper connection with its clients/customers?
Unanet believes that contributing to our community builds a stronger network of service oriented companies in the Loudoun County area. By making the county an even better place, Unanet gets to meet and work with other companies with similar core values. Because of this, Unanet is able to work with clients that they already have a deep connection with on this CSR basis.
What advice would you give to companies trying to participate in CSR?
Companies trying to participate in CSR need to simply pick a cause that is near and dear to their employees and select a project manager to lead the effort. By having employees passionate about the cause, it will ensure a dedication of effort on their part, and the project manager will ensure that the effort moves forward in a timely and organized manner.
