Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Awards Finalist Interview with Shirl Jenkins, Chief Human Resources Officer, IntelliDyne
1. Why do you believe CSR strategy is important for a company/you?
A CSR strategy is instrumental to any organization to help them compete in the marketplace and add value to their clients. A CSR strategy can help build brand recognition, innovation, create new business opportunities and enable organizations to attract and retain top talent. At IntelliDyne, we leverage our CSR program to strengthen the talents of our employees and to improve the services we offer our clients. As an employer of choice, we are passionate about enhancing the experience we bring to our clients, our employees and our partners. We differentiate ourselves from our peers by creating an environment where we challenge employees to be part of something bigger than themselves. We offer employees engaging opportunities to provide pro-bono work, a day of service, fundraising and donation drives throughout the year.
2. Do you believe that the CSR work you participate in should be affiliated with the work you/your company does? For example, should an Oil company’s CSR be in cleaning up oil spills?
The very foundation of a company’s CSR strategy should be created in support of the overall mission of the organization. CSR programs that closely align to their business strategy can help build brand loyalty, market awareness, new and innovative programs and services and attract talent that are closely aligned with the mission of the organization.
3. What makes you/your company stand out compared to other individuals/companies participating in CSR?
At IntelliDyne, our CSR strategy includes a 5 part model designed to enhance IntelliDyne’s ability to grow our business, increase market presence and develop the talents of our staff. We offer a variety of opportunities to support the needs of our employees. Our program includes skills based pro-bono opportunities, corporate sponsored volunteer events, internal professional focused volunteers such as mentoring and training, company sponsored subsidies to participate in races and sporting events that raise money for charities, company sponsored fundraising and donation drives in support of military and local charities as well as individual volunteer opportunities to include eight hours of paid time off per year to support a charity of their choice.
4. Do you believe contributing back to the community allows you/your company to have a deeper connection with your/its consumers?
As a government contractor, our mission is to support the mission of our clients, the Federal Government and the American people. As an organization, we demonstrate our commitment to our clients and their constituents by developing our CSR efforts to support veterans, technology, health, education and the environment. Our CSR efforts demonstrates to our clients and employees IntelliDyne’s commitment to supporting their mission and serving the communities in which we work.
5. What are some events or causes that inspire you and your team?
At IntelliDyne, we support our community by providing employees with opportunities to support nonprofit organizations which provide support to our military families, such as the Fisher House Foundation, Cell Phones for Soldiers, Final Salute, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) and Adopt a Platoon, in addition to various local organizations for which they are personally passionate about. In addition, we support other nonprofits such as Dress for Success. Furthermore, we offer employees opportunities to provide support through pro-bono work, day of service hours, donation drives and fundraisers throughout the year. Our efforts have enabled us to provide professional clothing to disadvantaged female veterans, prepare care packages and paracords for soldiers, raise funds to provide calling cards for soldiers serving overseas, enhance the landscape of a Fisher House, and more. In May 2014, after the wake of the VA scandal, IntelliDyne's CEO, Tony Crescenzo initiated a grassroots and social media campaign, centered on #365ActsofKindness4Vets. The campaign was created to encourage employees and others to do a daily act of kindness for the veteran community. The goal is to teach and inspire others in our community to give back to those who have bravely sacrificed to defend the values that make America great. We hope to encourage other to share their story of kindness on our social media feed and inspire others to do what we do at IntelliDyne every day: go “above and beyond” to serve our veterans.
