Innovation in organizations comes from a team that is always discovering and questioning the way things are done. It is fostered by an environment that allows the team to explore and test new ways of delivering existing services as well as being inspired to create brand new products, services or approaches. The culture has to encourage constant re-examination of services to address changes in the marketplace.
2. What makes Kalibri Labs innovative?
Kalibri Labs is on a mission to improve the health of the hotel industry by enabling hotels to manage
their customer acquisition strategy more effectively. The Kalibri analytics and technology platform is
purpose-built to improve profit contribution and the Kalibri team is challenged to create the needed
intelligence with no previous existing models. Every member of the team is creating templates and
solutions for the first time. It demands innovation for every task; there is nothing routine in the
company’s mission. The team can only succeed on their ability to think creatively. Innovation is infused
in the company’s DNA since every task requires it and since the company is doing something that has
never been done before in the hospitality industry.
3. Who or what are some innovative companies or people that inspire your team?
We keep a close watch on the online distribution space, specifically the consumer sites for travel; that is
part of our work, to know what is happening. There is so much innovation in that area so we monitor it
closely. We also watch the big data area and look at the many ways that data is being tapped to provide
lift to revenue levers.
4. What are some publications, print or digital, you read daily or have read that help you stay on top of your game?
Besides the hospitality trade press that we all read daily to stay current on the fast changing digital
marketplace, books like The Mobile Wave and magazines like Fast Company, sites like TechCrunch and Mashable are popular stops for current tech news and the many MediaPost online magazines share a lot of new online marketing updates. McKinsey puts out white papers that can provide some deep dives on strategy issues in many different industries that can influence our way of thinking.
5. What advice for up and coming leaders?
It’s important to look at many different industries to get ideas. We don’t limit our view to just the hotel
industry. The more curiosity and outreach to see what is happening in the marketplace, the more
opportunity to seed innovation in the organization. Attending conferences and talking to our clients
regularly can help clarify the problems that need solving and inspire creative solutions. We don’t ever
assume that the original way we choose to do things is the only way. There are many ways to solve
problems and it’s important to be open to change. A culture of questioning and pushing for excellence
will yield more creative approaches than accepting the status quo and sticking to known routines.
